With Wimbledon underway for another year, many of us are wondering exactly when we will see members of the Royal Family in attendance for one of the matches. The public often get a glimpse of the likes of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and The Duke of Kent at the highly-anticipated annual event.
A number of famous players have ties to the royals, whether it is Rafael Nadal’s close friendship with The Duchess of Cambridge or Serena Williams’ bond with The Duchess of Sussex. There is another link between one of the most famous tennis players in world and Prince William thanks to who her fiancé is.
Tennis legend Maria Sharapova been in a relationship with Alexander Gilkes since 2018 and became engaged to him on December 17, 2021. The couple announced in April 2021 that they are expecting their first child. Thanks to this relationship, Sharapova has become the latest in a long line of tennis players who are linked to the Royal Family as her fiancé is a close friend of both Prince William and Prince Harry.
Alexander Mark Heming Gilkes was born in London in July 1979 and has built an impressive career in the art world thanks to his many connections that stretch back to his school days at Eton College and his university days at the University of Bristol. Gilkes was a student at Eton at the same time as Prince William and has remained close with him over the years. He also has a link to The Duchess of Cambridge as his younger brother, Charlie Gilkes, dated her sister Pippa Middleton.
Alexander’s career as an art dealer has seen him co-found the online art auction house Paddle8 in 2011 and was the company’s president until 2018. Another royal link he has under his belt is an association with Princess Eugenie who worked at Paddle8 for two years.
